A shack on the coast, in gold

Est. 2024, 8 Moana Avenue, right next to the Orewa library. Fully renovated and reopened in June 2026 under new management.

The shop

Premium barbering, with the door open.

Those two things aren't supposed to go together. A shop that does a proper zero taper fade and a traditional Turkish hot towel shave is usually the sort of place you need to know someone to get into.

This isn't that. We're next to a library, in a beach town, at $45 a cut, and about half the people who sit down never booked anything — they just walked in. The work is sharp because that's the job. The door's open because that's the coast.

Fade Shack has been on Moana Ave since 2024. In June 2026 the whole place was pulled apart and put back together — new fit-out, new management under Sam the Barber, new chapter. The gold chairs, the hex lights, the live-edge table and the racing car in the corner all came out of that.

In his words

The reopening.

“The wait is over! After a complete renovation, Fade Shack Barbers is back with a fresh new look, new management, new faces, and a new beginning!”

Doors opened the next morning with Turkish coffee and baklawa on the go. That's roughly the level we're aiming for on an ordinary Tuesday, too.

The room

Not a dark cave.

The badge is near-black and gold, but the shop isn't. Honeycomb hex lighting, a live-edge wooden slab you can put your coffee on, a snake plant, GQ on the table, ornate gold barber chairs, a tan leather couch, and a PS5 if you'd rather do that than talk.

There's a racing car barber chair by the window for the kids, and free lollipops for after. Orewa's a family town — you can't run a barbershop here and treat kids as an interruption.

Honestly

4.7 out of 5, across 59 reviews.

Not a five. There are people in there who didn't get the cut they wanted, and we'd rather you saw those than pretend they don't exist. Read the lot on Google and make your own mind up.
